Security, explained simply
Modern IT and security in plain words, for anyone starting out. Each page takes one topic from this site, explains the big idea with everyday pictures, lists the words you will meet, and puts every field note on that topic into one sentence.
- Architecture and strategy
Security architecture is the plan for how all the locks, guards and alarms fit together, and the plan has changed a lot over the years.
- Identity and access
Your identity is your badge, and access is the list of doors it opens. People are not the only ones with badges.
- Network and segmentation
A network is the roads between computers. Security here is about how far someone can travel once they get in.
- Exposure and threat
Every system has weak spots. What matters is which ones a burglar can actually reach, on the things you care about most.
- Data protection
Data protection means knowing where your secrets are, and stopping them walking out of the door without stopping people working.
- Cloud and platforms
The cloud is someone else's computers that you rent. They look after the building; you look after what you put inside.
- AI
AI matters to security twice: it is a new thing to protect, and a new kind of helper that can do real things with real keys.
- Resilience and regulation
Resilience means the important things keep running when something breaks, including when it breaks at a supplier.
